In the fourth century the Roman army was reorganized. Under Diocletian and Constantine it came to be divided into field armies, which marched with the emperor, and frontier troops, who held the borders. Infantry wore mail and ridge helmets and carried large painted shields. Armored cavalry grew more important: Ammianus Marcellinus, describing a procession into Rome in AD 357, says the cataphracts looked like statues polished by Praxiteles rather than men. Vegetius advises training a third or a quarter of recruits with the bow.
The best-recorded battle of the age was fought near Argentoratum, modern Strasbourg, in AD 357. Ammianus reports that Julian, then junior emperor under Constantius II, had about 13,000 men against a much larger army of Alamanni under King Chnodomarius. When the Alamanni broke through toward the center, the legion of the Primani, posted in the reserve line, held them. Julian rode under a purple dragon on a long lance. Ammianus counts 243 Roman soldiers and four senior officers killed, and some 6,000 Alamanni dead on the field.
The plate sets four soldiers side by side, from the infantryman with his red and cream shield to the cataphract armored from head to foot. The purple dragon streams out above the archer, the one flash of color against the pale ground. Below, the battle line at Strasbourg is drawn in red, with the Primani picked out in black at the center of the reserve.
