Justinian's Code: a painting of a kneeling jurist presenting a gilded law book to Emperor Justinian on his throne, with clerks carrying volumes
Justinian's CodeAD 529
Constantinople · AD 529

A Thousand Years of Roman Law

Justinian came to the throne in 527 and within months set up a commission to collect the laws issued by Roman emperors. By April 529 his first Code was in force. He then ordered something far larger: a digest of the writings of the classical Roman jurists. A commission led by the lawyer Tribonian read nearly two thousand books, by Justinian's own account, and reduced them to the fifty books of the Digest, published in December 533 alongside the Institutes, a textbook for law students. A revised Code followed in 534, and Justinian's later laws, the Novels, after that.

The work was written in Latin, the language of Roman law, even as Greek became the everyday language of the Eastern Empire. In the West it was little known for centuries. When a manuscript of the Digest resurfaced in Italy in the eleventh century, the law school at Bologna grew up around it, and from there Roman law spread into the legal systems of much of Europe.

The piece

The painting is arranged as a presentation at court. The jurist kneels on the left, the gilded book raised in both hands. The marble steps rise in a diagonal from him to the emperor, who reaches down to receive it, his crown hung with pearls. Behind the jurist, assistants carry stacks of volumes, a reminder of how much was gathered. Shafts of light fall through the windows on the left, and through the arches lies the sea.

Sizes are the artwork's. Frames and hangers add a little around the edge.

Above a sofa or bed, art looks best at about two-thirds of the furniture's width, hung 8 to 10 inches above it.
