Gaius Julius Caesar was never emperor. He was a Roman general and statesman who held the office of dictator, an emergency magistracy of the Republic, several times between 49 and 44 BC. After he crossed the Rubicon in January 49 BC, he defeated Pompey at Pharsalus in 48 BC and the last republican armies at Thapsus and Munda. In 46 BC, between those two campaigns, he celebrated four triumphs in Rome.
The honors that followed had no precedent. According to Suetonius and Cassius Dio, the Senate granted him a golden chair in the Senate house and on the judge's platform, the right to wear triumphal dress and the laurel wreath, and a statue among those of the ancient kings. Early in 44 BC he became dictator in perpetuity. Some suspected he wanted to be king, and at the Lupercalia that February he publicly refused a diadem offered by Mark Antony. On 15 March 44 BC a group of senators led by Marcus Junius Brutus and Gaius Cassius Longinus killed him.
The painting sets him high on the steps between two great columns, so that we look up at him as a petitioner would. Purple and gold carry the eye from the laurel wreath down the folds of his robe to a leopard skin spilling over the marble. Below, a gilded eagle standard rises from a heap of arms, the spoils of his wars, and the bundled rods of his attendants frame the scene. Behind him, cypresses and a hilltop temple stand in the evening light.
