Power in the first imperial family passed by adoption and by marriage. Augustus had only one child, his daughter Julia, born to Scribonia. He made his stepson Tiberius his heir: Tiberius was the son of Augustus's wife Livia by her first husband, Tiberius Claudius Nero. Tiberius outlived his own son, Drusus the Younger, and the throne passed to Caligula, son of Germanicus and of Agrippina the Elder, Augustus's granddaughter.
Caligula was followed by his uncle Claudius, son of Drusus the Elder and Antonia the Younger, and so a grandson both of Livia and of Mark Antony. Claudius married his niece Agrippina the Younger in AD 49 and adopted her son Nero the next year, passing over his own son by Messalina, Britannicus. Nero, the last emperor of the line, died in AD 68. As the note on the plate observes, not one of the five was succeeded by a son of his own blood.
The design recalls the red walls of a Roman house, framed in black. Six portrait roundels run across the top, and the tree spreads beneath them, its gold-lettered emperors standing out against the cream names of wives, sisters and heirs. Follow the dashed gold lines and the story of the dynasty reads itself: from Caesar's will on the left, through Augustus and Tiberius, across to Claudius on the right, and down to Nero at the foot. The source line names Suetonius' Lives of the Caesars and Tacitus' Annals.
