Under the emperors, the Roman army was a standing, professional force. Citizen legionaries served alongside auxiliaries recruited mostly from the provinces, and Tacitus says that in AD 23 the auxiliaries were about as many as the legionaries. An auxiliary who completed his service, generally twenty-five years, received Roman citizenship, recorded on bronze certificates known today as military diplomas. Marcus Aurelius spent much of his reign with this army on the Danube.
Lucius Flavius Arrianus, better known as Arrian, was a Greek writer and a Roman governor. Governing Cappadocia under Hadrian, he faced the Alans, a nomad people of horsemen, and Cassius Dio says they withdrew partly out of fear of him. Arrian's short work on the order of battle against the Alans survives. He drew the legionaries up eight deep: the first four ranks with heavy spears to stop a charge, the next four with javelins to throw over them, and a ninth rank of foot archers, with mounted archers also shooting over the line.
The plate gives each of its four soldiers a different look, from the polished iron plates of the legionary to the blue shield of the auxiliary and the long scale coat of the archer. The horn-blower in the middle, his instrument circling his body, gives the row its rhythm. Below, the legion becomes a band of red stripes eight ranks deep, with the archers as fine rows of dots behind.
