The Greeks told of labors that Heracles performed for King Eurystheus, a cycle that appears as twelve on the temple of Zeus at Olympia around 460 BC. The Romans adopted the hero under the name Hercules and gave him a chapter of their own. Driving home the cattle of the giant Geryon from the far west, so the story goes, he rested by the Tiber. A thief named Cacus, in Virgil's version a fire-breathing monster, stole some of the cattle and hid them in his cave, and Hercules killed him. Livy, Virgil and Ovid all tell the tale, and Virgil has King Evander tell it to Aeneas on the future site of Rome.
In memory of that deed stood the Ara Maxima, the Greatest Altar, in the Forum Boarium beside the river, one of the oldest cults in the city. Merchants and generals offered a tenth of their gains there, and Plutarch says the wealthy Marcus Licinius Crassus did so on a grand scale. Hercules was honored as a protector of trade and victory, and as proof that a mortal could earn a place among the gods.
The frieze on the lion skin reads like a mosaic floor. Eight labors appear in panels between wave and meander borders: the Nemean lion, the many-headed Hydra, the hind, the Erymanthian boar, the Stymphalian birds, the Cretan bull, the horses of Diomedes, and the tree of the golden apples. The hero stands apart from it all at the left, his gaze turned away, holding the apples won in one of his final labors.
