In the spring of 218 BC, Hannibal Barca led a Carthaginian army out of New Carthage in Spain, bound for Italy by land. Rome controlled the sea, so he went the long way: across the Pyrenees, over the Rhone and through the Alps. Polybius records thirty-seven elephants ferried across the Rhone on rafts. The army reached the high passes in autumn, when fresh snow was already lying on the old.
The crossing took about fifteen days by Polybius' count. Mountain tribes ambushed the column in narrow places, pack animals slipped off icy paths, and a landslide blocked the way down. Livy's story that Hannibal split the rock with fire and vinegar is a famous tale that many historians doubt. Hannibal reached the plain of the Po with perhaps twenty-six thousand men, far fewer than he had set out with. Which pass he used has been argued over since antiquity.
Most of the elephants died in the months that followed. Livy says Hannibal rode the last survivor through the marshes of Etruria in 217 BC, while an infection cost him the sight of one eye.
The print turns the Alps red. Peak behind peak climbs to the top of the sheet in engraved black line, broken by drifting cloud, while the foreground ridge is white snow and black rock. Along its crest walks the column, so small that each soldier and mule is a single dark mark. Only the elephant stands out, its tusks pale, its rider facing the way ahead.
