Beneath the Dome of Hagia Sophia: a painting of the gold-domed interior of Hagia Sophia with shafts of sunlight, marble columns, hanging lamps and robed figures

Light Falling from Heaven

Hagia Sophia, the Church of Holy Wisdom, was built in under six years. After the Nika riots of AD 532 burned the earlier church, the emperor Justinian commissioned two scholars of geometry and mechanics, Anthemius of Tralles and Isidore of Miletus, to raise a new one. It was dedicated on 27 December 537. Its dome, carried on four great arches and pendentives, rose higher than any dome before it.

The historian Procopius described the interior in his book on Justinian's buildings. He wrote of a light that seemed to be born inside the church rather than to enter from outside, of many-colored marbles brought from across the Mediterranean, and of a dome that seemed to float. That first dome partly collapsed in 558, after earthquakes in 553 and 557, and was rebuilt higher by 562, but the effect he described survives today.

The piece

The painting stands on the floor of the nave and looks toward the apse. Columns of green and dark red marble carry the galleries on both sides, where small figures lean on the balustrades. Rings of hanging lamps descend on long chains. Above, the half-domes step upward to the main dome, and the light pours through its windows in visible beams, crossing the gold and landing on the polished floor. The people below are small on purpose. The building is the subject.

Which size?

Sizes are the artwork's. Frames and hangers add a little around the edge.

Above a sofa or bed, art looks best at about two-thirds of the furniture's width, hung 8 to 10 inches above it.
