Hadrian's Wall was begun in AD 122, after the emperor Hadrian visited Britain. According to the Historia Augusta, he was the first to build a wall, eighty miles long, to divide the Romans from the barbarians. It ran 80 Roman miles, about 73 modern miles, from Wallsend on the river Tyne to Bowness-on-Solway on the Solway Firth. Soldiers of three legions built it, with a small fort called a milecastle every Roman mile and two turrets between each pair. Larger forts for garrison units were soon added along the line.
The two ends are labeled with their Roman names. Segedunum, probably "strong fort" or "victory fort" in the British language, is the fort at Wallsend. Maia, at Bowness, was the westernmost fort on the wall itself, though towers and fortlets continued down the Cumbrian coast. Behind the wall the army dug the Vallum, a broad ditch flanked by banks that marked off a military zone. A small enameled bronze pan found in Staffordshire in 2003 lists forts on the western wall and the words rigore vali Aeli, "along the line of the Aelian wall", Aelius being Hadrian's family name.
The map is drawn like an old survey, in soft green and brown wash with fine hatching for the hills. The wall reads as a dark chain of squares across the middle of the sheet, rising highest where it crosses the crags at its center. Blue water closes the line at each end: the Irish Sea on the left, the North Sea on the right.
