Where the Empire Drew a Line
Hadrian came to power in AD 117 and soon turned from conquest to holding what Rome already had. His biography in the Historia Augusta says that in Britain he built a wall eighty miles long to separate the Romans from the barbarians. Work began in about AD 122. Legionaries of the Second, Sixth and Twentieth Legions built it, while auxiliary soldiers recruited from across the empire manned the forts along its line.
The wall ran from Wallsend on the River Tyne to Bowness-on-Solway in the west. Small forts called milecastles stood at every Roman mile, with two turrets between each pair, and larger forts held the garrison. In its central section the builders set the wall along the Whin Sill, a ridge of hard dolerite with steep crags facing north. Under Antoninus Pius the frontier moved north for a time to the Antonine Wall, but Hadrian's line was taken up again, and it marked the edge of Roman Britain until Roman rule ended in the early fifth century.
The piece
The print sets all of this in deep green, with the wall as the only pale shape in the picture. It runs in a long wave across the hills, its towers spaced like stitches, while the dark crag below follows it like a shadow. Halfway along, so small he is easy to miss, a single soldier keeps watch, and the sky above him takes up half the sheet.
