The Wall at Midwinter: a painting of a cloaked Roman sentry with an oval shield and spear by a fire basket on a snow-covered stone wall along crags
The Wall at Midwinter2nd century AD
Hadrian's Wall, Britannia · Midwinter

The Last Light on the Crags

Hadrian's Wall was begun around AD 122, after the emperor Hadrian visited Britain. His later biography in the Historia Augusta says he built a wall eighty miles long to separate the Romans from the barbarians. It crossed the island from Wallsend on the River Tyne to Bowness on the Solway Firth. In its central section it follows the Whin Sill, a ridge of hard rock whose north face drops away in sheer crags.

The Wall was a working frontier, not a sealed border. Gates at the milecastles let people and goods pass under watch. The garrison came largely from auxiliary units first raised in places as far apart as the Low Countries, Spain, Dacia and Syria. Letters from the nearby fort of Vindolanda, most written before the Wall, show soldiers' ordinary concerns, including a note sending socks, sandals and underwear to a soldier there. Winter on the crags was long, wet and dark.

The piece

The painting stands on the Wall with the sentry and looks along its line. The stone blocks in the foreground are heavy with fresh snow, and the ground to the left falls away into a pale, wind-blown valley. The only warm light comes from the fire at the sentry's feet and from one window in the turret ahead. Far off, a thin band of gold shows under the clouds, the last of a short winter day.

Which size?

Sizes are the artwork's. Frames and hangers add a little around the edge.

Above a sofa or bed, art looks best at about two-thirds of the furniture's width, hung 8 to 10 inches above it.
