Hadrian's Wall was begun around AD 122, the year the emperor Hadrian visited Britain. His biography in the Historia Augusta says he was the first to build a wall, eighty miles long, to separate the Romans from the barbarians. Many historians now see it less as a sealed barrier than as a controlled frontier, where people, animals and goods passed through its gateways under the eye of the army.
The men who kept it were mostly auxiliary soldiers, recruited from provinces across the empire. Small comforts mattered on that northern edge. Among the wooden writing tablets found at Vindolanda, a fort just south of the Wall's line, is a letter from the years before the Wall was built, probably to a soldier, saying that socks, sandals and underpants had been sent to him. The frontier was held, with one long break when Antoninus Pius moved the frontier north, until Roman rule in Britain ended in the early fifth century. Today it is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The print looks across at the Wall where it runs along a line of crags in falling snow. The stone comes in from the left along the crest, rises to the square tower on the summit, then drops away and winds off over the far hills. The cliffs are drawn in deep blue against the white, and the lake at their foot is the darkest thing in the picture. Up on the skyline, beside the tower, a single sentry gives the whole landscape its scale.
