The fire began on the night of 18 to 19 July AD 64, in shops full of flammable goods along the Circus Maximus, and the wind drove it fast through the narrow streets. Tacitus, our fullest source, says it burned for six days before it was halted at the foot of the Esquiline by pulling down buildings, then broke out again. Three of the city's fourteen districts were leveled, seven were left with only a few gutted ruins, and four were untouched.
The emperor Nero was at Antium when it started and returned to Rome as the flames neared his palace. Tacitus says he opened the Campus Martius and his own gardens to the homeless and cut the price of grain. He also reports a rumor that Nero had sung of the fall of Troy on a private stage while the city burned, and he leaves open whether the fire was an accident or arson. Nero blamed the Christians and had many of them put to death. He rebuilt with wider streets and more stone, and on the burned ground raised his vast Golden House.
The print is almost entirely black. The fire is a single band across the lower third, and the buildings stand in it as flat silhouettes, their light shaking in red on the water. Above it the dark sky goes up and up. In the lower right, at the very edge, a few small figures and two cypresses on the near bank look across at all of it.
