The Great Fire of Rome began on 19 July AD 64, in shops around the Circus Maximus that were full of flammable goods. Driven by wind, it spread through the narrow, winding streets for six days before it was stopped at the foot of the Esquiline Hill by pulling down buildings in its path. Then it broke out again elsewhere. Tacitus says that of the city's fourteen districts only four were untouched; three were leveled and seven left as a few scorched ruins.
The emperor Nero was at Antium when it started. Tacitus reports that he hurried back, opened the Campus Martius and his own gardens to the homeless and brought in grain. But a rumor spread that while the city burned he had sung of the fall of Troy on a private stage. There was no fiddle, and Tacitus presents the singing only as hearsay. Suetonius and Cassius Dio accuse Nero of starting the fire; Tacitus says the sources disagreed.
To silence the rumors, Tacitus says, Nero blamed the Christians of Rome and had many of them put to death.
The print is a long, low view across the river at night. The black outline of the city runs the width of the sheet: an aqueduct on the left, temple fronts, houses with lit windows, and on the right a hill crowned with buildings above the arches of a bridge. Above it, smoke and fire engraved in fine line fill most of the sheet, shot with sparks. The river below doubles it all.
