The Goths Cross the Danube: a painting of Gothic families crossing the Danube in crowded boats, watched by a mounted Roman officer on a landing stage

The Danube frontier · AD 376

A People Ferried Across

In the 370s the arrival of the Huns on the steppe north of the Black Sea threw the Gothic peoples into turmoil. In 376 a large body of Goths, the Tervingi, led by Fritigern and Alavivus, gathered on the north bank of the Danube and asked the eastern emperor Valens for land inside the empire. Valens agreed, hoping for recruits for his army and farmers for empty land.

Ammianus Marcellinus, a former Roman officer and the chief source, describes the crossing. The river was in flood after heavy rain. The Goths were ferried over day and night, and so many came that Ammianus says trying to count them was hopeless. The Roman commanders in charge, Lupicinus and Maximus, failed to feed them and profited from their hunger; Ammianus claims they bartered dogs for food in exchange for Gothic slaves, some of them the sons of chieftains. Other Goths, never granted entry, crossed anyway.

In 377 the Goths rose in revolt and ravaged Thrace. The following year they destroyed Valens and his army at Adrianople.

The piece

The painting sets us on the Roman side. The wet planks of the landing stage, the watchtower and the line of soldiers fill the right, and the officer's red cloak is the strongest color in the picture. Everything else belongs to the river: the gray water, the crowded boats coming toward us, and a single break in the clouds lighting the long procession from the far shore.
