The Golden Gate of Constantinople: a painting of a crowned emperor on a white horse riding through the marble Golden Gate of Constantinople as crowds throw flowers

The Emperor Comes Home

The Golden Gate stands near the southern end of the land walls of Constantinople, close to the Sea of Marmara. It was built as a freestanding triumphal arch, probably under Theodosius I or Theodosius II, and was later built into the Theodosian Walls. It was faced with polished marble, and its doors are said to have been plated with gilded bronze, which gave the gate its name. A group of bronze elephants is said to have stood above it.

The gate was opened mainly for ceremonies. Emperors returning from war entered through it to the acclamations of the people. Among the most famous were Basil II, who celebrated a triumph in 1019 after his long war against Bulgaria, and Michael VIII Palaiologos, who entered on foot in 1261 when the city was recovered from the Latins. Its marble towers and walled-up arches still stand in Istanbul.

The piece

The painting is composed like a stage. The two square towers frame the scene, and the central arch opens onto a bright view of towers and sea, as if the emperor were riding out of the light. He sits at the center on a white horse, flanked by mounted guards, while foot soldiers with banners and spears press behind. The crowds close in from both sides, mothers, children and old men holding out flowers, and petals on the stone lead the eye straight up the road to him.
