Winter on the Mese: a painting of the porphyry Column of Constantine in a snowy colonnaded forum at dusk, with lit shops and a man leading a mule
Winter on the Mese6th century AD
The Mese, Constantinople · 6th century AD

Snow on the Porphyry Column

The Mese, the Middle Street, was the spine of Constantinople. Lined with colonnaded shops, it ran west from the Milion, near Hagia Sophia and the Great Palace, through a chain of public squares toward the land walls. The first of those squares was the Forum of Constantine, laid out by the founder of the city around AD 330. It was round, ringed by two-story porticoes, with gateways where the Mese passed through.

At its center stood Constantine's column, built of drums of purple porphyry from Egypt, the stone of emperors, with the joints hidden by bronze wreaths. The first statue on top is said to have shown Constantine with a crown of sun rays, holding a globe. It fell in a storm in 1106 and was later replaced by a cross. The column still stands in Istanbul, scorched by fires, known as Çemberlitaş, the Hooped Stone. Winters were not always mild: the chronicler Theophanes describes the winter of 763 to 764, when the sea froze along the coast.

The piece

The painting looks across the forum at dusk as snow drifts down. Warm lamplight from the shops reflects on the wet marble, a soft gold against the blue of snow and sky. The column stands dark red at the center, leading the eye up to the statue against the clouds, while on the right a great domed church glows on the hill. In the foreground, wrapped figures and a man with his mule hurry home.
