Before the Battle of Philippi in 42 BC, the young Octavian, the future Augustus, vowed a temple to Mars the Avenger if he defeated the assassins of Julius Caesar. According to Suetonius, he built a new forum around it because the old forums could no longer hold the crowds and the lawsuits. He bought the land from private owners, and Suetonius says he made the forum narrower rather than force the last owners out. The Temple of Mars Ultor was dedicated in 2 BC.
The forum was a statement in marble. Its colonnades held statues of Aeneas, Romulus and the great men of Rome, each with an inscription recording his deeds, and Suetonius says Augustus declared they were there so that citizens would judge him and later leaders by their example. The upper story was lined with copies of the maidens of the Erechtheion in Athens, alternating with carved shields. A high stone wall at the back shut out the crowded Subura district behind, probably also as a barrier against its fires. The standards recovered from Parthia were kept in the temple.
The picture stands us at the open end of the square and lets the colonnades draw us in. Columns of white, blue and red march toward the temple, and the statues on their pedestals shrink as they go. At the end of the marble floor, the steps climb to the bronze doors, and the gray wall behind turns the pale temple into a stage.
