The Forum Boarium, the cattle market, lay on the flat ground between the Capitoline, Palatine and Aventine hills and the Tiber. It was among the oldest market places in Rome and stood beside the city's river harbor. By tradition Hercules himself was worshipped here first, at the Great Altar, the Ara Maxima, which Livy says was founded after the hero killed the monster Cacus.
The rectangular temple is usually identified as that of Portunus, god of harbors. Built of tufa and travertine around 100 BC, it shows Ionic columns across its porch and half-columns set into the walls of the cella. The round temple, ringed by twenty Corinthian columns, is generally thought to be the Temple of Hercules Victor, perhaps the one dedicated by a wealthy oil merchant. Built in the late second century BC of Greek marble, it is the oldest surviving marble building in Rome. Both became churches in the Middle Ages, which is why they survived. Nearby, the Pons Aemilius, begun in 179 BC, was Rome's first stone bridge.
The picture places the two temples like the wings of a stage. Garlands on low posts and potted laurels mark the paving, and a band of meander mosaic runs across the foreground. The open space between the temples draws the eye down to the water, the moored boats and the bridge, and then up to the green slope beyond.
