None of the first four emperors on this plate left a surviving son. Nerva, Trajan and Hadrian had no children, and the sons of Antoninus Pius died young. So each passed power to an adopted heir, mostly within his own wider family. Hadrian was the son of Trajan's cousin and married Trajan's great-niece, Vibia Sabina. Marcus Aurelius was the nephew of Antoninus's wife, Faustina the Elder, and married their daughter. Nerva's adoption of Trajan reached outside the family, as did Hadrian's of his first heir, Lucius Aelius.
Later writers praised the arrangement. Machiavelli credited adoption for the success of the five in his Discourses on Livy, and in 1776 Edward Gibbon named the years from the death of Domitian to the accession of Commodus as the time when the condition of the human race was most happy and prosperous. Marcus Aurelius, the first of the five with a son who survived him, made Commodus his heir. Commodus was co-emperor from AD 177 and sole emperor from 180 until he was strangled in a palace plot on 31 December 192.
The plate reads like a page from an old encyclopedia. The five portraits sit in a row at the top, each with a caption: Trajan born in Spain, Hadrian's Wall across northern Britain, Antoninus's second wall, Marcus writing his Meditations partly on campaign. The emperors are set in red and numbered, the dashed adoption lines step down the page from Nerva to Marcus, and Commodus waits at the bottom in his own gold medallion, beside the words 'his own son: the chain ends'. The source line names Cassius Dio, Pliny the Younger's Panegyricus and the Historia Augusta.
