Mount Vesuvius erupted in AD 79, in the first months of the emperor Titus' reign. The date long accepted is 24 August, from the manuscripts of Pliny the Younger, but a charcoal inscription found at Pompeii in 2018 and remains of autumn fruit have led many scholars to prefer 24 October. For most of a day a column of ash and pumice rose over the mountain and rained down on the towns to the southeast. Then surges of scorching gas and debris swept down the slopes and buried Pompeii, Herculaneum and Stabiae.
Our best witness is Pliny the Younger, then about seventeen, who described it years later in two letters to the historian Tacitus. His uncle, Pliny the Elder, commander of the fleet at Misenum, sailed toward the eruption and died on the shore at Stabiae. The nephew writes of a darkness worse than any night and of crowds on the roads calling out for parents, children and husbands or wives, many believing the world was ending.
Many of Pompeii's people seem to have escaped in the first hours. The remains of more than a thousand who did not have been found.
The print gives almost the whole sheet to the cloud. Engraved in tight curling lines, it climbs from the ground to the top edge in red and black, leaving only a scrap of blue sky in the upper left. The eye drops to the bottom of the picture, where a single horse and cart race along a rough road, dust flying from the wheels. On the right, small and quiet, stand the town walls, a temple and the mountain.
