Trajan: a painting of Trajan in a gilded cuirass and red cloak beside his legionaries, a stone-piered bridge over the Danube behind
TrajanAD 98
Emperor · AD 98–117

The Bridge That Crossed the Danube

Marcus Ulpius Traianus, born in AD 53 at Italica in Spain, was the first emperor born outside Italy. A career soldier, he was adopted by Nerva in AD 97 and became emperor in January AD 98. The Senate later gave him the title Optimus, the best.

His two wars against the Dacian kingdom of Decebalus, in AD 101–102 and 105–106, made his name. Between them, his architect Apollodorus of Damascus built a bridge across the Danube near Drobeta, in today's Romania. Cassius Dio describes twenty piers of squared stone joined by arches, which Trajan's Column shows in timber. At more than a kilometer long, it was among the longest bridges the Romans ever built, and remains of its piers survive on both banks. After the second war Dacia became a province. The spoils paid for the Forum of Trajan in Rome and for the column that tells the story of the campaigns in a spiral of carved scenes.

The piece

The painting sets Trajan close to us on the near bank, with the bridge running away behind him into the distance. His gilded cuirass catches the light breaking through the clouds, and the red of his cloak is answered by the shields of the men at his side. The eye follows the eagle standard, then the long line of piers and arches, to the fort on the far shore where the river widens into the evening haze.
