Tiberius, born Tiberius Claudius Nero, became emperor in AD 14 on the death of his stepfather and adoptive father Augustus. He was a seasoned general and a reluctant ruler, and his dealings with the Senate soured. In AD 26 he left Rome for Campania, and in AD 27 he settled on Capri, a small island off the tip of the Sorrento peninsula. Tacitus says its sheer coast and lack of landing places made unwanted visitors easy to keep away.
Tacitus says he had twelve villas on the island; the ruins of the largest, now called the Villa Jovis, still stand on its eastern cliffs. From Capri he governed by letter while his praetorian prefect, Lucius Aelius Sejanus, managed affairs in Rome. In AD 31 Tiberius turned on Sejanus and had him executed, and the treason trials that followed darkened his last years.
Suetonius and Tacitus repeat lurid stories about life at the villas, which many modern historians treat with caution as gossip about an absent and unpopular ruler. Tiberius died at Misenum in AD 37 without having entered Rome again.
The print splits the scene between earth and sky. On the left, in sharp black and pale stone, the old emperor stands on his terrace among cypresses and a single column, a small white figure above a sheer cliff and a scatter of sea rocks. Across the dark water the far coast is low and quiet. All the noise is above it: a ghostly Rome of temples, an equestrian statue and rows of watching faces, drifting in the red like a memory.
