Marcus Cocceius Nerva was born in AD 30 into a family of jurists and consuls. He served Nero, Vespasian and Domitian loyally and was twice consul. When Domitian was stabbed to death in his palace on 18 September AD 96, Nerva was named emperor the same day. He was about sixty-five, childless and in poor health, a safe choice for a frightened Senate.
The Senate condemned Domitian's memory. His statues were pulled down and his name was cut from inscriptions. Cassius Dio says Nerva swore that he would put no senator to death, and recalled those who had been exiled. Tacitus and Pliny the Younger both praised his reign as a return of liberty after years of fear. Yet he had no hold on the army. In AD 97 the Praetorian Guard besieged the palace and forced him to give up Domitian's murderers. Late that year, on the Capitol, he adopted Marcus Ulpius Traianus, governor of Upper Germany. Nerva died in January AD 98, and Trajan succeeded without a struggle.
The painting places him alone in the middle of the floor, with the Senate gathered behind him like a jury. Daylight falls from a high window onto his white toga and the purple band that runs from his shoulder to the hem. The scroll rests in his lap. His face is gaunt and watchful, and the dark bronze figure above, one arm raised over the hall, adds a quiet tension to the scene.
