Flavius Honorius became sole emperor of the West in AD 395 at the age of ten. In 402, with Gothic armies in Italy, his court moved from Milan to Ravenna, a city guarded by marshes and lagoons and open to the sea. From there Honorius ordered the execution of his general Stilicho in 408 and refused every settlement offered by the Gothic leader Alaric.
On 24 August 410 Alaric's Goths entered Rome and sacked it for three days. It was the first time in some eight hundred years that the city had fallen to a foreign enemy.
Procopius tells that the news was brought to Ravenna by one of the eunuchs, a keeper of the imperial poultry. Hearing that Rome had perished, Honorius exclaimed that it had eaten from his hands only a moment ago, for he owned a very large rooster called Roma. When the servant explained that he meant the city, the emperor was relieved. Procopius presents the story as something people said, and many historians doubt it.
The painting keeps the two halves of the story apart. In the light of the garden, the emperor bends toward the white hens at his feet, absorbed. In the shadow of the colonnade, the messenger waits with the letter in his hand. Far beyond the walls and the marsh, a thin trail of smoke rises into the gray sky.
