Hadrian: a painting of Hadrian in armor and a brown cloak on a crag above legionaries building a stone wall across moorland
HadrianAD 117
Emperor · AD 117–138

Where the Empire Drew Its Line

Publius Aelius Hadrianus, the son of Trajan's cousin and his ward from boyhood, became emperor in AD 117. He gave up some of Trajan's eastern conquests and turned to holding what Rome already had. Hadrian spent more than half his reign traveling through the provinces, inspecting armies and frontiers in person. He is also the first emperor whose portraits show a full beard, a fashion his successors kept for generations.

He came to Britain in AD 122. The Historia Augusta, a late and often unreliable collection of imperial lives, says he set many things right there and was the first to build a wall, eighty Roman miles long, to divide the Romans from the barbarians. Work began around that time under the governor Aulus Platorius Nepos. Building inscriptions show that the builders came from the Second, Sixth and Twentieth Legions. Small fortlets were placed at every Roman mile, with two turrets between each pair, and a chain of larger forts was added later. Long stretches still stand across Northumberland and Cumbria.

The piece

The painting puts Hadrian above the work, the way a commander would see it on inspection. His cloak is the darkest shape in the picture, and his gaze carries the eye out over the moorland. The wall comes toward us from the distance, past a gate tower, to the scaffolding and stacked blocks at the lower right where men are still at work. A break in the gray clouds lights the hills and the lake beyond.

Which size?

Sizes are the artwork's. Frames and hangers add a little around the edge.

Above a sofa or bed, art looks best at about two-thirds of the furniture's width, hung 8 to 10 inches above it.
