Lucius Aurelius Commodus was the son of Marcus Aurelius. He was made co-emperor in AD 177 and became sole ruler at eighteen, on his father's death in AD 180. He soon made peace on the Danube and returned to Rome, and the long Antonine calm began to unravel. After a failed plot in AD 182, in which his sister Lucilla was implicated, he left government to a series of favorites and prefects.
The ancient accounts, by Cassius Dio, Herodian and the Historia Augusta, are all hostile. They describe an emperor obsessed with the arena. According to Dio, who sat among the senators at the games of AD 192, Commodus killed beasts with bow and spear and fought as a gladiator, while the Senate was made to chant his praises. He took the titles of Hercules and son of Jupiter, and is said to have renamed Rome after himself. A marble bust in the Capitoline Museums shows him in exactly this guise, with a lion skin over his head and a club in his hand. On the last day of AD 192 he was strangled in his bath by an athlete named Narcissus, in a plot that reached into his own household.
The painting stands him alone on the sand, seen from low down, so that he towers over the crowd. The tawny lion skin and the arena floor share one warm color, and the lion's jaws make a crown above his face. The eye moves from his face down to the club, then out across the tiers to the shaded imperial box, where the watchers sit.
