Aurelian: a painting of Aurelian in mail and a red cloak on scaffolding atop the rising brick walls of Rome at sunset

Emperor · AD 270–275

A New Wall Around Rome

Lucius Domitius Aurelianus was born around AD 214 in the Danube provinces, of humble family, and rose through the cavalry. He became emperor in AD 270, in the middle of the third-century crisis, when the empire had split in three. The breakaway Gallic Empire held the West, and Queen Zenobia of Palmyra ruled much of the East.

In five years he put it back together. After driving the invaders out of Italy, he marched east, defeated Zenobia's armies and took Palmyra in AD 272 and 273. In AD 274 he recovered Gaul and Britain from the Gallic emperor Tetricus, and celebrated a triumph in Rome in which, by tradition, both Zenobia and Tetricus walked as captives. His coins call him Restitutor Orbis, the restorer of the world. In AD 275 he was murdered by his own officers near Byzantium, reportedly after a secretary forged a list of names marked for death.

The piece

His wall was built of brick-faced concrete, with a square tower every hundred Roman feet. It was finished under his successor Probus and raised in height later. The painting shows it going up: the warm red of the new brick, the rough timber of the scaffold and the long line of towers drawing the eye into the distance. Aurelian stands still in the middle of all the work, a soldier in mail, looking out over the city he means to protect.

Which size?

Sizes are the artwork's. Frames and hangers add a little around the edge.

Above a sofa or bed, art looks best at about two-thirds of the furniture's width, hung 8 to 10 inches above it.
