Augustus was born Gaius Octavius in 63 BC and was adopted in the will of his great-uncle, Gaius Julius Caesar. After the civil wars ended with the defeat of Mark Antony and Cleopatra at Actium in 31 BC, he became sole master of the Roman world. In January 27 BC the Senate voted him the name Augustus. He called himself princeps, the first citizen, and the system he built is known as the Principate.
He rebuilt Rome as well as its government. In the Res Gestae, the account of his achievements that he left to be set up at his mausoleum, Augustus lists the temples he restored and built, a new Forum with its Temple of Mars the Avenger, theaters, porticoes and repairs to the aqueducts. His friend Marcus Agrippa added public baths, the first Pantheon and new water supplies. Suetonius records the famous boast about brick and marble.
The painting shows him as a builder rather than a general. He stands at the edge of the terrace, half turned from the view, as if called away from the plans for a moment. The low sun picks out the folds of the toga and the purple stripes on his tunic, then runs on across the city: temple fronts on the hills, round buildings among the roofs, bridges over the Tiber, and wooden scaffolding still climbing the walls of temples not yet finished. Cypress and laurel frame the scene on the left.
