The Eagle-Bearer of the Tenth: a painting of a Roman standard-bearer wading through surf with a golden eagle toward white cliffs and Britons with chariots
The Eagle-Bearer of the Tenth55 BC
The Coast of Britain · 55 BC

Unless You Would Lose the Eagle

In 55 BC, in the middle of his conquest of Gaul, Gaius Julius Caesar crossed the Channel with two legions, the Seventh and the Tenth, in about eighty transports. In his own account, the Gallic War, he says that when he reached Britain he found armed men lining the cliffs, so he sailed some miles along the coast to an open shore. The Britons followed by land, sending their cavalry and chariots ahead, and met the Romans at the water's edge.

The ships drew too much water to run aground. Weighed down by armor and unsure of the footing, the soldiers held back. Caesar writes that the eagle-bearer of the Tenth, after praying that his act might bring the legion good fortune, called out that they should jump unless they wished to betray the eagle to the enemy, adding that he at least would do his duty to the Republic and his general. He leapt into the sea, and the rest followed. The landing was won, though storms and fighting cut the expedition short. Caesar returned the next year with a larger force, but Britain would not become a Roman province until AD 43.

The piece

The painting puts us in the surf just behind the bearer. Chest-deep in gray-green water, he lifts the gilded eagle into a break in the storm clouds, his mail shirt dark with spray. On the left, legionaries crowd the rail of the ship, crested helmets and red shields ready. Ahead, beneath the white chalk cliffs, the Britons wait on the shingle with spears and chariots.
