The Mistletoe: a painting of a white-robed druid cutting mistletoe from an ancient oak with a golden sickle, druids holding a cloth below
The Mistletoe
Gaul · as told by Pliny the Elder, c. AD 77

The Golden Sickle and the Oak

Almost everything we know about the druids' mistletoe rite comes from one passage in the Natural History of Pliny the Elder, completed around AD 77. Pliny says the druids, as the Gauls called their priests, held nothing more sacred than mistletoe and the tree it grows on, so long as that tree was an oak. Mistletoe on oak is rare, and when it was found, he writes, it was gathered with great ceremony.

According to Pliny, the rite took place on the sixth day of the moon. Two white bulls were brought whose horns had never been bound before. A priest dressed in white climbed the tree and cut the mistletoe with a golden sickle, and it was caught in a white cloak. Then the bulls were sacrificed, with prayers that the god would make his gift bring good fortune. The druids believed, Pliny says, that a drink made from it gave fertility to barren animals and was a remedy for all poisons. He adds, a little dryly, that peoples often hold trivial things in religious awe. No other ancient writer confirms the details.

The piece

The painting follows Pliny closely and builds the scene around one enormous oak. Its mossy limbs spread across the frame like the vaults of a hall. High in the center, the white figure reaches up with the golden blade, a thin crescent moon hanging in the sky beside him. Below, the cloth is held open, and the two pale bulls stand waiting at the left. The eye climbs the trunk and comes down again with the falling mistletoe.
