The Praetorian Auction: a painting of Didius Julianus in a toga bidding up to Praetorian guardsmen on the brick walls of their camp at dusk

Castra Praetoria, Rome · AD 193

The Throne Goes to the Highest Bidder

On 28 March AD 193, soldiers of the Praetorian Guard killed the emperor Publius Helvius Pertinax, who had ruled for less than three months and had tried to impose discipline on them. With no emperor and no obvious heir, the guardsmen withdrew to their fortified camp on the edge of Rome, the Castra Praetoria.

Cassius Dio, a senator who lived through these events, tells what followed. Sulpicianus, already inside the camp, offered the soldiers money for the throne. Didius Julianus, a wealthy senator of about sixty, hurried to the walls and bid against him from outside. When Julianus promised 25,000 sesterces a man, the soldiers let him in and hailed him as emperor.

The purchase did him little good. The people of Rome jeered him in the streets, and three provincial armies proclaimed their own commanders. One of them, Lucius Septimius Severus, marched on Rome. The Senate condemned Julianus, and he was killed in the palace on 1 June 193, after a reign of sixty-six days.

The piece

The painting draws a long line of brick wall from the left edge to the tower and the shut gate. Above, helmeted guardsmen lean over the parapet and gesture; below, a lone figure in a purple-bordered toga lifts his hand to them. A small group waits behind him with the money chest. Far off on the right, the temples of the city catch the last of the light.

Which size?

Sizes are the artwork's. Frames and hangers add a little around the edge.

Above a sofa or bed, art looks best at about two-thirds of the furniture's width, hung 8 to 10 inches above it.
