Diana, Goddess of the Hunt: an illustration of Diana drawing her bow beneath a crescent moon, two hounds running and a blue mantle patterned with deer

Huntress Beneath the Crescent Moon

Long before Rome ruled Italy, the Latins worshiped Diana in her grove at Nemi, beside a lake later called the Mirror of Diana. Ancient writers report a strange custom there. Her priest, the King of the Grove, was a runaway slave who won the office by killing the man who held it, and kept it only until a stronger challenger came. In Rome, according to Livy, King Servius Tullius built her a temple on the Aventine as a shrine shared by the Latin peoples. Her festival on August 13 was, Plutarch says, a holiday for slaves.

The Romans identified her with Artemis, the Greek huntress, and took over her stories. The tale of Actaeon, the hunter torn apart by his own hounds after he saw the goddess bathing, is a Greek myth that Ovid retold in the Metamorphoses. Diana was also linked with the moon. Virgil speaks of the three faces of the virgin Diana, and the crescent became her sign.

The piece

The illustration sets her on a long diagonal from her back foot to the tip of the arrow. Her white tunic and pale skin stand out against the cream ground, while the color gathers in the mantle behind her: a deep cobalt field filled with white trees, cypresses and running deer, edged with spirals and laurel borders. A gold crescent shines in her hair and another in the sky. Low cobalt and gold plants grow along the ground where the hounds run.

Which size?

Sizes are the artwork's. Frames and hangers add a little around the edge.

Above a sofa or bed, art looks best at about two-thirds of the furniture's width, hung 8 to 10 inches above it.
