Decebalus became king of the Dacians around AD 87, during their war with the emperor Domitian. The Dacian kingdom lay north of the Danube, in the Carpathian Mountains, and was rich in gold. Cassius Dio describes Decebalus as shrewd in war, a man who knew when to attack and when to fall back. Domitian's war ended in a treaty that paid him subsidies, which many Romans thought a disgrace.
The emperor Trajan fought two wars to end it. The first, in AD 101 and 102, forced Decebalus to accept harsh terms. In AD 105 he took up arms again, and in AD 106 the Romans besieged and took Sarmizegetusa Regia, the royal center in the Orăștie Mountains, whose stone walls still stand in the forest. Decebalus fled, and when Roman cavalry overtook him he took his own life rather than be captured. A trooper named Tiberius Claudius Maximus carried his head to Trajan; his tombstone, found in Greece, records it. Trajan's Column in Rome tells the whole story in carved spirals.
The painting gives the king his last high place. He stands on the timber walkway above the pale stone wall, square to the valley, with the wolf-headed standard rising behind him like a challenge. His men's shields are painted with red spirals, and their falxes curve above their heads. The eye goes from his face out over the mist to the fires in the valley, and back again.
