Tiberius Sempronius Gracchus was tribune of the plebs in 133 BC. He passed a land law that capped how much public land one family could hold and shared the surplus among poor citizens. Many senators, whose families had occupied that land for generations, saw it as a threat to their wealth and to the Senate's authority.
When Tiberius stood for a second consecutive term as tribune, which had no precedent, his enemies said he was aiming at kingship. According to Plutarch and Appian, the assembly met on the Capitol while the Senate sat nearby in the Temple of Fides. Scipio Nasica demanded that the consul act, and when he refused, Nasica called on all who wished to save the state to follow him. Senators and their attendants armed themselves with clubs and the legs of broken benches and went out into the crowd. Tiberius fell near the Temple of Jupiter and was beaten to death.
His younger brother Gaius took up the same reforms ten years later and died in similar violence in 121 BC. Many historians see the killing of Tiberius as the beginning of the long end of the Roman Republic.
The painting is built on a long diagonal. The senators pour down the temple steps from the upper right, a wave of white wool and purple stripes, led by the hooded figure at its front. In the lower left, Tiberius stands alone, half turned, his shadow stretching back toward them. Beyond him, the crowd is already running.
