The Cumaean Sibyl: a painting of the aged Cumaean Sibyl seated at the end of a long stone gallery, leaves swirling, a traveler kneeling before her

Prophecies Written on Leaves

Cumae, founded in the eighth century BC and the oldest Greek colony on the Italian mainland, was famous across the ancient world for its Sibyl. In the sixth book of the Aeneid, Virgil sends Aeneas to her cave below Apollo's temple. Seized by the god, she speaks in a voice no longer human, and then guides him into the underworld.

Other stories gather around her. Ovid tells how she refused Apollo's love but kept his gift of long life, and so grew older for centuries without dying. Dionysius of Halicarnassus and Aulus Gellius tell how an old woman offered Tarquin the Proud nine books of prophecy, burned three when he refused her price, then three more, until he paid the full price for the last three. The Sibylline Books were kept on the Capitol and consulted by order of the Senate in times of crisis. Petronius has a character claim to have seen the Sibyl at Cumae hanging in a jar, wishing only to die.

The piece

In 1932 the archaeologist Amedeo Maiuri cleared a long, tapering gallery cut into the rock at Cumae, lit by side openings, and identified it as the Sibyl's cave; its date and purpose are still debated. The painting takes that passage as its setting. Light falls across the floor in bars, leading the eye past the kneeling traveler to the Sibyl at the far end, who looks up toward something we cannot see as the leaves scatter around her.

Above a sofa or bed, art looks best at about two-thirds of the furniture's width, hung 8 to 10 inches above it.
