The New Rome: an illustration of a crowned figure tracing a line of light across a vast violet field, followers behind and a town by the sea

Byzantium · AD 324

Walking Out the Walls

In September AD 324 Constantine defeated his co-emperor Licinius at Chrysopolis, across the water from Byzantium, and became sole ruler of the Roman world. Soon afterward he chose Byzantium, a Greek city founded nearly a thousand years earlier, as the site of a new imperial capital. Its position was hard to match: a headland between the Black Sea and the Mediterranean, at the crossing from Europe into Asia.

Late in 324, the story goes, Constantine marked out the line of the new walls himself, walking with a spear in his hand. The church historian Philostorgius tells that when his companions thought he had gone far enough, Constantine answered that he would keep going until the one walking ahead of him stopped, as if he followed a guide no one else could see. The new city, far larger than the old one, was dedicated on 11 May 330. It was soon called New Rome, and it took its founder's name: Constantinople. It remained an imperial capital until 1453.

The piece

The print is almost all field: a wide violet slope, combed with faint curved lines. Across it runs the boundary, a single thread of light drawn behind the leader's spear. His followers trail after him in a short file. Only in the upper right does the world open out, onto a dark town on its headland and blue water with four white sails, the future waiting at the end of the line.

Which size?

Sizes are the artwork's. Frames and hangers add a little around the edge.

Above a sofa or bed, art looks best at about two-thirds of the furniture's width, hung 8 to 10 inches above it.
