The Queen of Cities: a painting of Constantinople at sunset from the sea, with sea walls, a domed church on the hill and three sailing ships
The Queen of Cities6th century AD
Constantinople · 6th century AD

Sunset Over New Rome

Constantinople was built to be seen from the water. Constantine the Great dedicated his new capital on 11 May AD 330, on a promontory between the Sea of Marmara, the Bosporus and the Golden Horn. Water on three sides and walls on every side made it one of the hardest cities in the world to take, and for centuries it was also one of the largest and richest.

The Greek-speaking citizens of the Eastern Empire never called themselves Byzantines. That name was given by later scholars. To themselves they were Romaioi, Romans, and their city was New Rome. Writers praised it as the Queen of Cities, and visitors from West and East alike marveled at its walls, churches and markets.

The piece

The painting looks across the water toward the sea walls as the sun sets on the left. Along the shore a curved arcade rises above the battlements beside a tall column topped by a statue, and the eye climbs the hill from roof to roof to the dome of Hagia Sophia, lit gold against a blue sky. In the foreground three vessels are under sail: two long oared ships with curled prows and a broad merchant ship heading in, its deck stacked with cargo. The low sun lays a path of light across the water toward them.

Sizes are the artwork's. Frames and hangers add a little around the edge.

Above a sofa or bed, art looks best at about two-thirds of the furniture's width, hung 8 to 10 inches above it.
