Constantine: a painting of Constantine in a gilded cuirass and purple cloak gazing at sunlight breaking through clouds above a Tiber camp
ConstantineAD 306
Emperor · AD 306–337

Before the Battle at the Milvian Bridge

Flavius Valerius Constantinus was proclaimed emperor by his father's army at Eboracum, today's York, in July AD 306. Years of civil war followed among the rulers of the divided empire. In AD 312 he invaded Italy and advanced on Rome, where Maxentius held the city with a larger army.

Two Christian authors tell what happened next, and their accounts differ. Lactantius, writing within a few years, says Constantine was told in a dream to mark the heavenly sign of God on his soldiers' shields. Eusebius of Caesarea, writing after the emperor's death, says Constantine told him on oath that he and his army had seen a cross of light in the sky above the sun, with words promising that by this sign he would conquer. Historians still debate what, if anything, he saw. The outcome is certain. On 28 October AD 312 Maxentius' army was beaten at the Milvian Bridge, and Maxentius drowned in the river. In AD 313 Constantine and his co-emperor Licinius granted freedom of worship to Christians and all others. He became sole ruler in AD 324 and founded Constantinople.

The piece

The painting is lit from the sky. Rays fall through a break in the storm clouds and turn the river to gold, and Constantine's upward gaze leads us straight to them. The gilded cuirass and purple cloak catch that light, while his soldiers, the tents and the smoke of the campfires stay in shadow. On the far bank lies the city, waiting for the morning.
