By AD 312 the Roman Empire had several rival emperors. Constantine, proclaimed by his father's army at York in AD 306, marched from Gaul into Italy against Maxentius, who held Rome. Maxentius came out to meet him, and the armies fought near the Milvian Bridge, the old stone crossing of the Tiber north of the city, with Maxentius' army's back to the river. His line broke. According to the sources, a temporary bridge of boats gave way under the retreating troops, and Maxentius was drowned.
The battle became one of the founding stories of Christian Europe. Lactantius, writing a few years later, says Constantine was told in a dream to mark his soldiers' shields with a heavenly sign. Eusebius, who said he heard it from the emperor himself years afterward, tells of a cross of light seen above the sun, with words promising that by this sign he would conquer. Historians still debate what, if anything, Constantine saw. What is certain is that in AD 313 he and his fellow emperor Licinius granted Christians freedom of worship, and that from AD 324 Constantine ruled the whole empire alone.
The print turns the scene into gold. Sky and river are one field of light, broken only by the dark band of the bridge and its row of arches. Along the top, the soldiers march in silhouette from left to right with spears and round shields, horsemen at the rear, a single banner at the center and one rider out in front. The bridge runs on past the edge of the picture, toward Rome.
