The Cohort Battle Line: an illustration of three soldiers of Caesar's army beside a diagram of a legion's ten cohorts in three battle lines
The Cohort Battle Line58 BC
Caesar's legions · from 58 BC

Four, Three and Three

Gaius Julius Caesar is our best witness to how a late-republican legion fought. In his account of the battle against the Helvetii near Bibracte in 58 BC, he says he drew up his four veteran legions in a triple line, the triplex acies. In his Civil War he gives the detail: four cohorts of each legion in the first line, three in the second and three in the third.

The lines had different jobs. The front line opened the fight, and the second could move up to support or relieve it. The third was a reserve. Against the Germans of Ariovistus, Caesar says, the young cavalry commander Publius Crassus saw the Roman left giving way and sent in the third line, which turned the battle. Each unit followed its standard, carried by a signifer, and the whole legion followed its eagle, carried by the aquilifer.

The piece

The plate gives the soldiers the left half of the page and the battle line the right. The three figures stand on one ground line, the hand-topped standard and the golden eagle rising above the helmets. Across the page, the cohorts glow red in the first line and darken to black in the reserve, so the eye reads the order of battle from front to back at a glance.
