Cleanthes: an illustration of Cleanthes as an old man with a bald crown and full curling beard, in a cross-hatched engraved-style portrait
Cleanthesc. 262 BC
Stoic Philosopher · c. 330–230 BC

The Water Carrier of Athens

Cleanthes came from Assos, on the coast of Asia Minor facing the island of Lesbos. According to Diogenes Laertius, he worked by night drawing water in the gardens of Athens so he could study by day, which earned him the nickname the Well-Water Carrier. Summoned before a court to explain how a man with no visible income could live, he is said to have brought the gardener as his witness.

He was known as a slow learner and a tireless one. Diogenes Laertius records that Zeno compared him to tablets of hard wax, difficult to write on but holding fast what is written. After Zeno's death around 262 BC he led the school for some three decades. He taught that the universe is ruled by divine reason and that the good life means living in agreement with nature. He is said to have died at a great age by refusing food.

His Hymn to Zeus survives because the anthologist Stobaeus copied it out. Epictetus and Seneca both quote another of his short prayers, asking Zeus and Destiny to lead him willingly wherever he must go.

The piece

The portrait is drawn in close, regular hatching. Light falls from the left across the furrowed forehead, the deep-set eyes and the thick, curling beard, while the drapery sweeps down to the right into the soft edge of the oval.

Which size?

Sizes are the artwork's. Frames and hangers add a little around the edge.

Above a sofa or bed, art looks best at about two-thirds of the furniture's width, hung 8 to 10 inches above it.
