Cicero wrote the Orator in 46 BC, while Julius Caesar ruled as dictator and Cicero had withdrawn from public life. He addressed it to Marcus Junius Brutus, the future assassin of Caesar, as a portrait of the ideal speaker. Among the things that speaker needs, Cicero says in section 120, is a knowledge of history and its examples, because recalling the past lends a speech both authority and credibility.
Cicero himself was a lawyer, consul in 63 BC and the greatest orator of Rome. In philosophy he followed the skeptical Academy, which held that certainty is rarely within reach, but he gave the Stoics a respectful hearing. His Stoic Paradoxes and On Duties, which draws heavily on the Stoic Panaetius, carried their ideas to Latin readers. He was killed in the proscriptions of 43 BC at the demand of Mark Antony.
The words on this piece are a faithful English translation of Orator 120. Some quotation collections cite the line to his Brutus, but it belongs to the Orator. In Latin the last word is 'boy,' and translators give both 'boy' and 'child.'
The design sets a white marble bust against a deep night-blue ground, lit from the upper left so that the brow, cheekbone and folds of drapery catch the light. The clean-shaven face, receding hairline and furrowed forehead follow the portrait type of Cicero known from Roman busts.
