Chrysippus was the third head of the Stoic school in Athens, after Zeno of Citium and Cleanthes. Diogenes Laertius says he trained first as a long-distance runner before turning to philosophy. He was famous for his skill in argument, and he is said to have told Cleanthes to teach him only the doctrines, since he would find the proofs himself.
He built Stoicism into a complete system of logic, physics and ethics. His work on propositions and inference made him one of the great logicians of the ancient world, and his teaching on fate, the passions and the rational order of nature shaped every Stoic who came after him, including Seneca, Epictetus and Marcus Aurelius. Stories of his death vary. Diogenes Laertius reports that he died after drinking unmixed wine at a sacrifice, or, in another version, that he laughed himself to death watching a donkey eat figs. Neither can be trusted.
Cicero describes a seated statue of Chrysippus in the Ceramicus at Athens, one hand stretched out as if in argument, and Roman marble heads are thought to copy his portrait.
The picture shows him in close cross-hatched line on pale paper: the domed, deeply lined head turned to the left, the heavy brow and set mouth of a man still turning a problem over, and the drapery falling in long diagonal folds to the edge of the oval.
