Ceres was the power that made grain grow, and in a city that lived on bread, that made her essential. Her temple on the Aventine, shared with Liber and Libera, was vowed in a time of war and famine and dedicated, by tradition, in 493 BC. It was closely tied to the plebeians, and their officials, the plebeian aediles, kept records there. Her festival, the Cerealia, ran for a week in April, with games in the Circus Maximus. Ovid describes a strange rite at the festival, in which foxes with burning torches tied to their backs were let loose.
The story behind her torch is Greek. In the myth of Demeter and Persephone, which Romans told as Ceres and Proserpina, the god of the underworld carries off Ceres' daughter. Ovid tells how the grieving mother lit torches at the fires of Mount Etna and searched the world by day and by night, until it was agreed that Proserpina would spend part of each year with her mother and part below the earth. Poppies, which grew among the grain, appear with Ceres on Roman coins and reliefs.
The illustration is built as a tall triangle. The goddess rises from a broad base of wheat, her white gown embroidered with ears of grain and flowing out into rows of gold. Near the bottom it becomes a border in the manner of a mosaic: a cobalt meander, red poppies, small birds and leafy sprays. Behind her the field runs to a low horizon, where a farmhouse stands among cypresses.
