Livia, the mother of Servilia and Cato, married twice. By her first husband, Quintus Servilius Caepio, she had Servilia; by her second, Marcus Porcius Cato, she had Cato the Younger. So Cato was the uncle of Servilia's son, Marcus Junius Brutus. Servilia's first husband, Brutus's father, was killed on Pompey's orders in 77 BC.
Suetonius says Caesar loved Servilia above all other women. Plutarch repeats talk that Brutus was Caesar's son, which most historians doubt, and the plate does not draw it as a line. Brutus sided with Pompey in the civil war and was pardoned by Caesar in 48 BC. Cato, a Stoic, took his own life at Utica in 46 BC rather than accept Caesar's pardon. A year later Brutus married Cato's daughter Porcia, widow of Bibulus. On 15 March 44 BC Caesar was stabbed to death at a meeting of the Senate, with Brutus and his brother-in-law Cassius among the conspirators. Porcia died in 43 or 42 BC, by her own hand, say most ancient writers.
The plate is set in gold and ivory on black, with three engraved medallion portraits of Cato, Brutus and Caesar. The eye goes first to Servilia at the center, where the lines meet, then follows the dotted line across to Caesar. Beneath the tree, Tacitus recalls the funeral of Junia Tertia in AD 22, when the images of twenty great families were carried, and Cassius and Brutus outshone them all because their likenesses were not to be seen.
