Caratacus Before Claudius: a painting of Caratacus in chains and a gold torc before Claudius and Agrippina, his family and Roman guards beside him
Caratacus Before ClaudiusAD 51
Rome · AD 51

The Captive Who Spoke as an Equal

Caratacus was a son of Cunobelinus, the powerful king of southeast Britain, and he led resistance to the invasion launched by the emperor Claudius in AD 43. Driven west, he fought on among the Silures and Ordovices of Wales. Defeated in battle around AD 50, he fled to Cartimandua, queen of the Brigantes, who put him in chains and handed him to the Romans.

Tacitus describes his arrival in Rome. The Praetorian Guard stood under arms on the plain before its camp. His followers, his brothers, his wife and his daughter were led past, with the spoils of his wars, and showed their fear. Caratacus did not. In the speech Tacitus gives him, he says that had his moderation in success matched his rank, he would have come to Rome as a friend, not a prisoner. Put him to death and he will be forgotten; spare him and he will stand forever as proof of Roman mercy. Claudius pardoned him and his family. They then gave the same thanks to Agrippina, seated on a separate tribunal nearby, a sight Tacitus calls new and foreign to ancestral custom.

The piece

The painting sets the Briton at the center and lets everyone else look at him. He stands with one chained hand half raised, as if in mid-sentence, his face lifted toward the tribunal. His wife and daughter look up as well. Above them, Claudius in purple sits very still, and the soldiers on either side wait for his word.
