An Emperor's Egypt by a Pool

Hadrian, emperor from AD 117 to 138, built his great villa below the town of Tibur, modern Tivoli, about 30 kilometers east of Rome. It was less a house than a landscape of palaces, baths, libraries and gardens. According to the Historia Augusta, he gave parts of it the names of famous places he had seen, among them the Lyceum, the Academy, the Poikile and the Canopus.

The real Canopus was a town near Alexandria at the mouth of the Nile, known for its temple of Serapis and for the canal that linked it to the city. Hadrian toured Egypt in AD 130. At the villa, the name went to a pool nearly 120 meters long, curved at one end and closed at the other by a half-domed hall, often called the Serapeum, which is thought to have been used for summer dining. Excavations in the 1950s recovered its statues: copies of the caryatids of the Erechtheion in Athens, Amazons, river gods and a marble crocodile.

The piece

The picture looks down the length of the water from behind a marble balustrade. The arches overhead and the inlaid wave mosaic at our feet form a frame, and the pool does the rest, doubling every statue and column and carrying the eye to the shadowed hall and its falling water. The quiet is complete: nothing moves but the cascade.

Which size?

Sizes are the artwork's. Frames and hangers add a little around the edge.

Above a sofa or bed, art looks best at about two-thirds of the furniture's width, hung 8 to 10 inches above it.
