In the summer of 216 BC, Rome sent the largest army it had yet fielded against Hannibal Barca, who had been loose in Italy for two years. The consuls Lucius Aemilius Paullus and Gaius Terentius Varro met him near the village of Cannae in Apulia, beside the river Aufidus. Polybius says the Romans had about eighty thousand infantry, roughly twice Hannibal's foot soldiers.
Hannibal drew up his Gallic and Spanish infantry in a forward curve at the center, with his best African troops held back on either wing. As the Roman mass pushed the center back, the Africans turned inward on its flanks. Meanwhile his cavalry under Hasdrubal routed the Roman horsemen and rode around to fall on the legions from behind. Packed so tightly that many could not use their weapons, the Romans were surrounded and cut down.
Polybius puts the Roman dead at about seventy thousand, Livy at nearly fifty thousand, and Paullus was among them. Yet Rome refused to make peace, and fourteen years later Hannibal was beaten at Zama.
The print looks down on the battle from far above, as no one present could have seen it. The red plain is almost empty except for the armies, drawn as dense black texture. At the center sits the Roman block, square and solid; around it curves the crescent of Hannibal's infantry; and from the top, two plumes of dust show the cavalry riding to shut the ring.
