In 55 BC Gaius Julius Caesar decided to cross the Rhine. Germanic tribes from beyond the river had been crossing into Gaul, and Caesar wanted to show that the Roman army could reach them in their own country. Crossing in boats, he wrote, would be beneath his own dignity and that of the Roman people. So he built a bridge, probably somewhere near Koblenz, though the exact site is unknown.
Caesar describes the design in Book IV of The Gallic War, and this plate follows him closely. Pairs of timbers a foot and a half thick were driven into the riverbed by machines, leaning with the current. Opposite them, 40 feet away at the bottom, a second pair leaned against it. Each set was capped with a beam two feet thick and held with clamps, so that the harder the river pushed, the tighter the frame locked. Timbers laid lengthwise across the trestles were covered with poles and wattle. Extra piles braced the downstream side, and more stood upstream to stop tree trunks or boats sent down to wreck the bridge. The work was finished ten days after the timber began to be gathered.
The plate is drawn in white on deep blue, like an engineer's blueprint. The eye goes first to the great trestle at left, its legs angled against each other, then to the arrow of the current and the row of fender piles. At right, the plan repeats the structure from above. Latin terms label each part, with English beneath.
